Purpose
This animated PSA conveys that drought is happening all around the world without us realizing it. By using iconic movies and meticulously picking out specific disastrous incidents in those movies, we cleverly relate the scenes to drought, as if the drought was the cause of that movie calamity. We take these scenes and connect them to parts of the world that have already experienced the extreme effects of drought.
For example, in Lion King, the infamous scene with the stampede of wildebeests that ultimately caused the death of Mufasa, is an example of drought forcing herds of animals in Africa to migrate to search for water. We used Ice Age as another example because of drought’s effects on global warming which causes glaciers to melt. Lastly, the sandstorm in Mission Impossible 4 that Tom Cruise had to run away from, may have happened because drought caused extremely dry weather conditions that can easily cause dust storms in the middle east.
Process
This project was created in an Advanced 3D Motion Graphics class at ArtCenter College of Design. We were asked to develop a strong concept and animation relating to drought. We had to create 5 separate vignettes that can each stand alone but also work together as one piece when put together. Each vignette needs to tell its own story but stays consistent and relevant to the overall approach.
For the ADAA competition, we’ve narrowed down our five vignettes to the three strongest ones and created a website and posters to go along with our animation. We’ve taken this extra step to further our call of action. We’ve included outside links in our website that teach more about drought and what precautions we can take to stay safe and help contribute.
